October notes from the homestead
October 13, 2026
Neighbors — we know you, and we can help you. This letter points to what we wrote on the blog, and to grass-fed beef and Navajo-Churro sheep, plus Fertrell.
The blog is where we talk with you, including the worries about quality. Read a note, then write back under it. This letter is for a small community of customers, people we can know and keep feeding. When you want a share of beef, grass genetic animals, wool, or sheep meat, or something from the Fertrell shelf, call. Your meat is custom processed the way you want it, at Palmyra or at Dawning Day Processing in Clayton, Illinois. If you custom order within a reasonable distance, we can deliver. We are a local dealer for Fertrell. I could not do what I do without you.
On the blog
- A local dealer for Fertrell
This farm is a local dealer for Fertrell. Natural fertilizers, soil amendments, and livestock minerals. Call and ask what is on hand.
- Why the grass matters, and why local is the check on it
What changes in the beef when the cow lives on grass, and why a store label is not the same as a farmer you can call.
- The Navajo-Churro flock
A rare breed we raise and protect. Never any grain. Sometimes they are corralled and fed hay. Wool and meat upon request.
- Grow more grass. Feed less hay.
Restoring native grasslands, resting each pasture before it is grazed again, and a visit if your own grass is the question.
- How a share of beef works
A quarter, a half, a three-quarter, or a whole. The price is not posted. The cut is yours.
- Know your farmer
The question we hope you ask before you buy from us, and an open invitation to write back.
From the farm
- Grass-fed beef
A quarter, a half, a three-quarter, or a whole. Custom processed the way you want it. The price is not posted. We walk through it when we meet.
- Navajo-Churro sheep
A rare breed we raise and protect. Never any grain. Sometimes the sheep are corralled and fed hay so they can be protected from predators. Wool and meat upon request.
- Local Fertrell dealer
Natural fertilizers, soil amendments, and livestock minerals. Call and ask what is on hand. No catalog and no prices on the site.
- Milling and grazing
The sawmill comes to your logs, or you bring them here. We are restoring native grasslands and resting each pasture before it is grazed again. Kyle will look at a pasture if you want more grass and less hay.
To buy, call (309) 634-1518. The letter tells you what to read and what is listed. The phone is how it leaves the farm.
